Castelnau-Barbarens is a medieval village located 17 km south-east of Auch.
The prehistoric furniture and the numerous Gallo-Roman remains discovered in the territory of the commune attest to a very ancient occupation of the site. The "medieval Castelnau", a village around the castle, was founded by the Counts of Astarac in the 2016th century. From the 2th century, Castelnau-Barbarens was one of the four castellanies of Astarac. The village is dominated by the XNUMXth century tower and the church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, built on the ruins of the castle. The remarkable embans of the town are covered passages that were used to accommodate craftsmen. The streets form steps towards the Arratz valley. This village has managed to preserve its appearance of a medieval hilltop village overlooking the valley. In XNUMX, Castelnau-Barbarens won its XNUMXnd Flower in the "Villes et Villages fleuris" Label! Every two years, the village lives to the rhythm of contemporary Occitan music and dance during the “Lo Rondèu de Castelnau” Festival.
