A luxurious Roman house
In 1962, on the archaeological site of Roquelaure-Sioutat located 8 km fromAuch, excavations and prospecting by aerial photography reveal a vast and sumptuous palace of 1600 m².
The walls of the domus with a central courtyard were decorated with splendid frescoes, comparable to those of Pompeii.
Built in the 20s BC. AD, the house has a plan reminiscent of the classic organization of Roman houses. Remains bear witness to the splendor of this palace: elements of black and white mosaic and a large series ofpainted plasters that decorated the walls.
The frescoes of the site of Roquelaure-la Sioutat
This is Museum of the Americas-Auch that the visitor can admire the reconstructed painted panels. These frescoes present scenes from Roman mythology, characters, motifs of plants or animals.
The cinnabar red of this decoration is part of the Pompeian ornamental repertoire. These frescoes, found in 1962 by Marcel Cantet, were already exceptional because they were unique in Gaul.
