His real name Charles de Batz-Castelmore, Count d'Artagnan, the most famous of the Musketeers was born between 1611 and 1615 at Castelmore castle, near Lupiac, in Gascony. When he left his province for Paris around 1630, he decided to take his mother's name, Françoise de Montesquiou d'Artagnan. He enlisted in the Cadets of the French Guards then joined the Musketeers. Louis XIV gave him all his confidence, D'Artagnan became captain-lieutenant of the company of the Musketeers. He died in 1673 during the siege of Maastricht. The place of his burial is unknown.
