STATUE OF ANTOINE MEGRET D'ETIGNY (1719-1767)

Located on the top of the steps of the alleys of Etigny, the work of the Toulouse sculptor Jean-Pierre Vigan presents the intendant appointed at the head of the very vast generality of Gascony in 1751. Antoine Mégret d'Etigny has a priority built for the construction of a large road network, from Bayonne to Toulouse, and Agen to the Pyrenees, placing Auch as a meeting point in the middle of this network.

An honest and passionate character, he does not hesitate to pay in advance parts of the work from his own funds. A supporter of quality town planning, he mainly favors that of towns, among which we can clearly mention Bayonne, Dax, Saint-Gaudens, Tarbes, Pau and Luchon. The city of Auch, for its part, will be completely transformed. He had two new squares established outside the city: the Place de la Patte d'Oie in the valley, and that of the Porte Neuve on the plateau. New streets were developed: the lower town was linked to the upper town by the future rue d'Alsace, the Treille bridge and the rue de l'Intendance, today rue Gambetta. Public buildings gradually decorate the administrative center: the Town Hall, the Hotel de l'Intendance (the current post), the theater, the barracks.
