Auch in the XNUMXth century
Cassini's maps bear the name of the family of geographer and cartographer, who carried out on behalf of the Kings of France, then the Napoleonic Empire, the first general map of France.
They were produced from surveys carried out between 1756 and 1789. Their publication lasted until 1815. They were not replaced until the end of the XNUMXth century by military maps - the famous maps of Staff - then by the maps of the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
These maps are still widely used by geographers and environmental specialists.
The website of IGN “Géoportail” proposes to review France through the maps of Cassini. Below is the map centered on the Auch sector.
Note that we know an older image of the city of Auch thanks to the Belleforest map which dates from 1575.
