DISCOVERY VISIT OF THE VILLAGE OF CASTELNAU-BARBARENS

The guides-lecturers of the Country of Art and History invite you to walk around Grand Auch to discover its history and its heritage.

In the 12th century, Bernard I, Count of Astarac, and Guillaume Arnaud Desbarrats, co-lords of the place, chose the strategic site of Barbarens on the side of a rocky spur to build a new castle (castet nau). Around the seigniorial castle, the village gradually developed, itself enclosed within a fortified enclosure, pierced by three gates. Along the streets, discover the remains of the medieval era with its pousterles, its embans, its numerous half-timbered houses... Let yourself be told the story of the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel as well as that of the Sainte-Quitterie church, built in the 19th century on the site of the old castle.
