Like every Friday evening, the Ménard family meets at "Au père calme", the bistro run by Henri, one of the sons. He is waiting for his mother, possessive and authoritarian, Philippe his brother-in-law and his sister-in-law Yolande who is celebrating her birthday that evening. His true tomboy sister Betty and Denis the waiter are already there, and it would be a very quiet evening if Henri's wife Arlette didn't tell him straight off that she was leaving him. The celebrations then take on the appearance of settling scores.
