THEATER: DOM JUAN BONELESS

Don Juan, “the bridegroom of the human race,” kidnapped Elvira from her convent, seduced and abandoned her. She pursues him in vain while he already sets off towards a new conquest, accompanied by his valet Sganarelle. A storm throws him onto a beach where he promises to marry two peasant women. Pursued by Elvire's brothers, he must flee again. Lost in a forest, he will incite a poor hermit to blasphemy, save one of Elvira's brothers from bandits, and invite to dinner the statue of a commander he recently killed. Returning home, he gets rid of his main creditor, insolently refuses his father's remonstrances, tries to seduce again Elvira who has come to ask him to repent or fear the wrath of heaven. To his great surprise, the statue comes to dinner and invites him back. Dom Juan announces to his father that, touched by grace, he has decided to change his life and work “to obtain from Heaven a full remission of his crimes”. Dom Louis leaves him, distraught with happiness. Happiness shared by the naive Sganarelle, whom Dom Juan hastens to disabuse, by giving a long and vibrant praise of hypocrisy. A “spectre in a veiled woman” urges him to repent for the last time. He responds by drawing the sword. The statue of the Commander appears, who, incriminating his "hardening to sin", extends his hand to him and throws him into the flames of hell. Left alone, Sganarelle mourns the loss of his wages.

For all.
