VILLAGE OF PESSAN

Pessan, located between Auch and Castelnau-Barbarens, was founded during the construction of the Benedictine abbey in the 13th century. The village is an old country house which preserves a remarkable architecture. It is rich in Gallo-Roman remains, a sarcophagus of white marble carved in En Castéra and a treasure of coins from the Middle Ages. The abbey of this village was destroyed and rebuilt several times, notably during the XNUMXth, XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. It was replaced later by a chapter of twelve canons. The Pessan tower gate is also a major site of this picturesque village: it is a vestige of the old fortifications from the XNUMXth century. It is a typical specimen of a fortified gate in a Gascon village in the Middle Ages. The door is open in one of the square towers which provided the flanking of this village. Village of the Country of Art and History of Grand Auch, guided tours are offered by guide-lecturers (all year round for groups by reservation, according to a calendar for individuals). All dates and practical information are available from the Grand Auch tourist office.
