VILLAGE OF CASTELNAU-BARBARENS

Castelnau-Barbarens is a village located 17 km south-east of Auch. The prehistoric furniture and the many Gallo-Roman remains discovered on the territory of the town attest to a very old occupation of the site. The "medieval Castelnau", a village around the castle, was founded by the Counts of Astarac in the 2016th century. From the 2th century, Castelnau-Barbarens was one of the four castles of Astarac. The village is dominated by the XNUMXth century tower and the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié church, built on the ruins of the castle. The remarkable embans of the city are covered passages which were used to accommodate the craftsmen. The streets form terraces towards the Arratz valley. This village has managed to keep its aspect of a medieval hilltop town dominating the valley. Castelnau-Barbarens in XNUMX gleaned its XNUMXnd Flower with the Label "Cities and Villages in bloom"! Every two years, the village lives to the rhythm of contemporary Occitan music and dances during the “Lo Rondèu de Castelnau” Festival. Village of the Country of Art and History of Grand Auch, guided tours are offered by guide-lecturers (all year round for groups by reservation, according to a calendar for individuals). All dates and practical information are available from the Grand Auch Tourist Office.
