THE POUSTERLES

from Latin "posterula": postern
There are five steeply sloping medieval alleys in Auch. They constitute one of the curiosities of the city. They made it possible to reach the river from the upper town, in order to supply water. The "old pousterle" is wider than the others and has no bleachers.
Some have Gascon names: Les Couloumats (the pigeons), Las Oumettos (the little elms)
