Installed at the foot of the Tour d'Armagnac (former prison), this museum of sacred art allows you to access part of the dungeons, the lower rooms of the canonry, as well as the remains of the primitive cathedral.
The Treasury Museum presents more than 200 objects of religious art: paintings, sculptures, goldsmith's work, which are showcased as real works of art, and not just as devotional objects.
On site, videos, touch pads and interactive terminals allow you to discover this heritage setting, and all the restoration work that has been accomplished.
Place of exhibition, this museum is also an interpretation center of the cathedral, its history and its architecture, but also of the buildings of the old ecclesiastical court (courtrooms, dungeons) and of the district of the canons ( remains of the chapter house).
The Sainte-Marie cathedral is a major site on the ways of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, classified with the world heritage of UNESCO, under the ways of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.
It stands on the site of an old 1489th century Romanesque church. Its construction lasted two hundred years (1680 - 2), which explains the variety of styles: Flamboyant Gothic for the whole of the work, and Renaissance for the facade framed by 44 towers 100 m high. Surprisingly large (about 40 m long and XNUMX m wide), this cathedral is one of the last Gothic cathedrals in France and one of the richest.
Throughout the year (depending on the schedule), the Pays d'art et d'histoire offers guided tours of the museum. For about 1 hour and 15 minutes, a passionate guide will tell you all the secrets of this very special place, and the treasures it shelters! Visits for groups can also be booked at the tourist office.
Since 2022, you can visit the Treasury Museum of the Cathedral with the Baludio application, to discover this site dynamically!
