Nougaroulet

This little village, originally called "Nogarolet" or little walnut tree, is built on a former defensive mound. Some ruins of the castle, itself destroyed before the 15th century, have been integrated as walls or windows of the existing 17th-century houses. The ramparts were demolished upon the order by Richelieu in 1624 at the same time as those of a number of other fortified villages. Although the buildings are gone, the site on its rocky outcropping remains a pleasant one, with its succession of shady paths along the terraces that mark the various levels of the former walls.
