Ciné32 continues its partnership with the Bruits d'Couloir association, chaired by Alain Mazza. The organization helps bring the corridor's exhibition space to life by showcasing the works of photographers from Gers and beyond.
"Let's try an experiment: ask anyone on the street, in a café, in an office, or in a university classroom, 'What does Brazil mean to you?' We all know the answer: Rio de Janeiro, its carnival, Copacabana, Christ the Redeemer atop its mountain, bossa nova, the favelas… The more cultured among us will mention Manaus, its opera house, its golden age. But the Northeast… Who will talk about this region of Brazil except for specialists of this country, which is almost the size of a continent? Yet, right there, within our grasp, Tiago Santana's unwavering lens reveals the fascinating and inexhaustible reality of this Northeast of Brazil, where he was born."
He photographs, first of all, the earth: dry earth, grassless earth, flowerless earth, treeless earth. Simply the earth. Then the animals. Those that feed humans and those that help with farm work. They are all mixed together: horses, donkeys, pigs, roosters, hens… Not forgetting the cats and especially the dogs; solitary dogs that seem to know no particular master: the village dogs. And finally, of course, there are the children who are part of the landscape. From these photographs emerges the baroque idea of the profound fecundity of chaos. This fragmentation of bodies and objects ultimately gives the impression of photographs taken spontaneously, in the manner of an objective and impartial documentary, tangibly revealing the brutality and precariousness of living conditions in the Northeast.
