The Auscitain museum is hosting an exhibition covering 60 years of Peruvian photography, showing a more modern image of a country attached to its historical roots.
Last year, while visiting the exhibition “The Vicus Mystery – The Spirits of the Earth”, Rolando Javier Ruiz Rosas Cateriano, the Peruvian ambassador to France, expressed the wish to develop the partnership between his country and the museum Auscitain, rich in its pre-Columbian collections. His wish was granted since the Museum of the Americas-Auch hosted the exhibition “Memories of Peru” – on loan from the embassy – covering 60 years (from 1890 to 1950) of Peruvian photography. The natural wonders of the territory of Peru, the great monuments of its pre-Columbian past, the ancestral customs interconnecting with the modernizing aspirations of the time, the social conflicts of a society in formation are frozen in these 80 quality reproductions, which have been exhibited all over the world.
These images are part of a Peruvian photographic tradition which has been nourished by the talent of a group of visual creators, using the camera as a means of depicting, understanding and interpreting this country... far from clichés: “It’s interesting to break the archaeological image of Peru and show another, more realistic vision of a modern country,” explains Fabien Ferrer-Joly, the curator. And then it’s mainly about photos of daily life, so It’s always very enriching.” This exhibition highlights the talent of masters of the lens from the "golden age of Peruvian photography" such as Sébastian Rodriguez, Max T. Vargas or of course Martin Chambi, who by posing good society like peasants alone embodies the imagery of a nation and its historical roots, to be discovered at the Museum of the Americas-Auch.
