Presentation
To the southwest of the cathedral, Armagnac tower overlooks the city from forty metres above. Built to serve as a prison in the 14th century, the tower has gone through a number of uses: as a symbol of the judicial responsibilities of the medieval archbishop, a depository for chapter archives under the Ancien Régime, and a prison during the Gers Terreur and after the coup d'état of 2 December 1851.

Place Salinis, where the tower stands, is named for the 19th-century archbishop who, alongside the prefect Féart, took the decision to demolish the former canons cloister and lodgings, as well as the adjacent houses, to create a green area filled with nettle trees opening onto the Gers Valley.

The lower parts of the Armagnac Tower are accessible during the open period of the treasure of the cathedral (from june to september).
