The statue of D’Artagnan sculpted in 1931 by Firmin Michelet proudly overlooks the Gers from the bottom of the monumental staircase. He is depicted in a standing position with one fist on his hip, dressed in his Musketeer attire.

This most famous of Musketeers was born Charles de Batz-Castelmore sometime between 1611 and 1615 at Castelmore castle, near Lupiac, in Gascogne. Count of Artagnan, he left his province for Paris around 1630. He chose to adopt the last name of his mother, Françoise de Montesquiou d'Artagnan. He served in the Gardes Françaises, then joined the Musketeers. Louis XIV put his trust in D’Artagnan, who became lieutenant of the Musketeers.

D'Artagnan died in 1673 during the siege of Maastricht. His burial site is unknown.

Alexandre Dumas discovered the life of D'Artagnan by reading his memoires. He became interested in the figure, and took inspiration from him to write his famous trilogy, The Three Musketeers.
